Role Playing Game, A.K.A. RPG: A classic example of an RPG would probably be zelda, you play the role of link, a young kikori child (who turns out to be a hyrulian anyways...) who has to go save a princess bla bla etc. everyone knows of the game, its a ledgend. Nowadays RPG refers to any game where you take a particular role in a gameplay environment MMOs don't tend to appear nowadays, they tend to be more of a sub-genre, for example World of Warcraft is an MMO-RPG, GunZ: The Duel is a TPS-RPG and i guess even games like battlefield 2 are FPS-RPGs because you take the roll of a soldier in the modern war.
